The Umatilla Project In the s prospective farmers traveled across the United States' Louisiana Purchase in the hope of obtaining good farmland in Oregon. These early settlers primarily converged on the fertile lands of the Willamette Valley, bypassing the Umatilla area as they followed the Oregon Trail to the West Coast.
